I came across this article and really enjoyed it. It goes into further detail about editing (airbrushing) photographs.

In case you were curious, this is my process:
Whenever I complete a photo session, I download my images onto my computer. I then do a quick scan of the lot. Next stop, I begin to rate the photos with a 3, 4, or 5 star.
Next, I do minor adjustments to the 3 stars. I save my larger editing for the 4 and 5 stars. During my editing process I really try to focus on the features of the subject and the lighting. I want to highlight the emotion of the photo... This is when I begin to play with copies of images and express my creativity. I also keep in mind what my client likes from either the consultation or discussion during the photo shoot.
So, when I work with your photographs, I do retouch them and add or take away here and there, but it's to enhance the beauty, not to withhold the truths of the subject; such as that freckle...that makes you you!
